Craig D. Peterson, Esq.
About
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Craig Peterson. His dedication to the law and his lasting contributions to the legal community will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Craig Peterson served as Chief Appellate Court Attorney with the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Department for more than 30 years, retiring in 2016. In that role, he reviewed cases submitted to the Court and made recommendations on their resolution, while also supervising the central research staff of more than 20 appellate court attorneys. He worked closely with the Court’s leadership, helping to shape procedures, policies, and the day-to-day functioning of appellate review across western and central New York.
Before his tenure with the Appellate Division, Craig developed substantial trial experience as an Assistant District Attorney in Erie County and in private civil litigation practice in the Buffalo area.
Craig earned his Juris Doctor from the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School and his bachelor’s degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.
Beyond his formal accomplishments, Craig’s influence on the legal profession was profound. Over the course of his career, he mentored and trained generations of young attorneys who passed through the Appellate Division as law clerks. He was known not only for his intellect and judgement, but for his generosity with his time, his steady guidance, and his genuine interest in the development of others. It is no exaggeration to say that hundreds of lawyers across New York were shaped, in some way, by Craig’s mentorship. He seemed to know everyone, and more importantly, he made everyone feel known.
He will be remembered for his optimism, positivity, and unmistakable charm. He brought energy to every interaction, always finding something encouraging to say and setting a tone that lifted those around him. For many, he was not only a respected colleague, but a trusted mentor and a true friend.
Craig’s impact on our firm was significant. He exemplified the values we strive to uphold—integrity, preparation, care for clients, and a commitment to doing things the right way. His influence will remain part of our culture and our work.
We are grateful for Craig’s life, his leadership, and the example he set. He will be deeply missed.
